Holotropic Breathwork: What It Is and How It Can Help You

Full day including sharing and integration

A practice using accelerated breathing to access non-ordinary states of consciousness.

What is Holotropic Breathwork?

A practice using accelerated breathing to access non-ordinary states of consciousness.

Benefits

  • Accesses non-ordinary states without substances
  • Supports resolution of biographical and transpersonal material
  • Can catalyse spiritual emergence and peak experiences
  • Deeply somatic — releases held tension and emotion
  • Developed by Stanislav Grof from decades of consciousness research

What to Expect

Holotropic Breathwork is practiced in pairs — one person breathes, the other sits as 'sitter'. You'll breathe to evocative music for 2–3 hours, using an accelerated, connected breath. The music, breath, and bodywork (if needed) allow the psyche to heal itself through what Grof calls the 'inner healer'. Afterwards, you create a mandala and share in a group process. Sessions are held in weekend or multi-day retreats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it the same as regular breathwork?
Holotropic Breathwork is a specific, trademarked approach developed by Stanislav and Christina Grof. It's longer, more intensive, and conducted in a specific container. Other breathwork methods are related but distinct.
Can I do it alone?
No. Holotropic Breathwork requires a trained facilitator and sitter. It's specifically designed to be done in a supported group container.
Are there contraindications?
Yes — cardiovascular conditions, psychosis, severe PTSD without trauma-informed support, pregnancy, and others. A thorough intake is mandatory before participation.
