Pilates: What It Is and How It Can Help You

What is Pilates?

A physical fitness system focused on controlled movements, core strength, and body alignment.

Benefits

  • Builds core strength and spinal stability
  • Improves posture, alignment, and movement efficiency
  • Supports rehabilitation from injury and chronic back pain
  • Develops body awareness, coordination, and breathing
  • Suitable for all levels — from rehabilitation to athletic conditioning

What to Expect

Pilates is taught on a mat or using specialised equipment (Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair). Classes focus on precise, controlled movements with emphasis on breath, core engagement, and spinal articulation. Mat classes are group-based; equipment sessions are often one-to-one or small group. Expect to be corrected — precision is central to the method.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who developed Pilates?
Joseph Pilates (1883–1967) developed the method he called "Contrology" while interned in the UK during WWI. He later opened a studio in New York where he trained dancers and athletes.
Is Pilates the same as yoga?
Both develop body awareness, breath, and flexibility, but Pilates has a stronger focus on core stability and spinal rehabilitation. Yoga has a broader spiritual and philosophical framework.
