What is Osteopathy?
A type of alternative medicine emphasizing physical manipulation of muscle and bone.
Benefits
- Effective for back, neck, and joint pain with strong evidence base
- Addresses the root mechanical cause rather than just symptoms
- Supports recovery from sports injuries, accidents, and postural strain
- Safe and effective for infants, pregnant women, and the elderly
- Works with the body as an integrated whole — structure and function together
What to Expect
The first session includes a detailed case history, postural and movement assessment, and physical examination. The osteopath uses their hands to assess and treat — techniques range from gentle soft tissue work and joint mobilisation to high-velocity adjustments (if appropriate). You remain clothed or in underwear. Treatment plans are individualised. You may feel stiff for 24–48 hours after.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between osteopathy and chiropractic?
- Both work with the musculoskeletal system. Chiropractors focus more specifically on spinal adjustment; osteopaths take a broader whole-body approach including soft tissue, organs, and cranial work.
- Is osteopathy regulated in Italy?
- Yes — osteopathy has been officially recognised in Italy since 2021 (Law 3/2018). Osteopaths must be registered with the professional register (Albo degli Osteopati).
