What is Dance Movement Therapy?

A therapeutic use of movement to support intellectual, emotional, and motor functions.

Benefits

  • Integrates body and psyche through movement
  • Supports processing of emotion and trauma somatically
  • Builds body confidence and expressive range
  • Addresses non-verbal and pre-verbal experience
  • Deeply playful yet therapeutically rigorous

What to Expect

Sessions are movement-based rather than performance-oriented. You won't be taught choreography — instead, you'll be invited into improvised, expressive movement guided by the therapist. There may be music, props, or structured exercises. The therapist may move with you or observe and reflect. Verbal reflection can be woven in. Comfortable, loose clothing is essential.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need dance experience?
No. Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) is not about technique or performance. All movement styles and bodies are welcome.
Is it suitable for people who feel disconnected from their body?
Yes — in fact, this is one of DMT's primary applications. The modality gently supports people in (re)inhabiting their body experience.
Can I do DMT if I have physical limitations?
Yes. Movement can be adapted to any capacity, including wheelchair-based work. Inform your therapist of any physical considerations.
